Western Indian Ocean Early Career Scientists Network

About Us

OVERVIEW

The Western Indian Ocean Early Career Scientists Network (WIO-ECSN) is an initiative to promote scientific research through fostering strong regional ties among early career scientists and representing their collective scientific interests at an international level. The main purpose of the WIO-ECSN is to communicate research priorities from the views of early career scientists to the scientific leadership of the WIO region, as well as to provide a platform for facilitating interdisciplinary and regional research collaborations.

The WIO-ECSN provides facilitation to regional programmes to contribute to the development skills and knowledge with future generations of interdisciplinary marine scientists to shape research in the WIO region. The legacy of the WIO-ECSN will enable to bring together the early career scientists in the region, where they will be able to share their research and knowledge of marine science across multiple disciplines of the WIO, and to promote local and regional exchange.

The network comprises of eleven member states namely: Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mayotte, Mozambique, Reunion, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and Tanzania. The network has elected a committee to manage and coordinate the activities of the network. The WIO ECSN core objective facilitate and communicate research priorities as a voice from early career scientists and strive.

VISION

To bring together the early career marine scientists for development of marine sciences in the Western Indian Ocean region.

MISSION

To strengthen capacity of early career scientists in the Western Indian Ocean region through partnership with relevant stakeholders.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To develop skills and knowledge with future generations of interdisciplinary marine scientists to shape research in the WIO region.
  2. To bring together the early career scientists in the WIO region and enable them to share their research and knowledge of marine science across multiple disciplines of the WIO region through conferences, trainings and workshops, as well as to promote local and regional exchange.
  3. To develop expertise for effective researches and management of coastal and marine environments and contribute to sustainable development.
  4. To raise public awareness on the importance of coastal and marine science through research works, publications, conferences and social media platforms.
  5. To promote and enhance networking, cooperation and access to exchange of relevant knowledge and information between researchers, managers, decision-makers and the general public at large.
  6. To request for financial assistance from stakeholders for research activities and programmes and engage in activities which will promote the long-term sustainability of the network, provided that these do not compromise the aims and objectives of the Network.
